Reshooting a perfectly good video

Talking to a friend recently about videos, the video for Mr Brightside came up.
When it was first released by The Killers, Mr Brightside had the black & white video as seen below here Exhibit A.

I remember seeing it when I came home one night from been out and thought, wow, this is a great, simple video, and a great track and this is when the killers were starting to get big. Which brings us to the point. The single did really well as we all know and is still getting a lot of club, pub and jukebox play and probably will for a long time, however this black and white video didn’t seem to cut the mustard with the A&R people (does anyone know what these people actually do). So they went out and spent what looks like about 50k minimum on a glossy ‘high production video- exhibit B.

Make up your own mind, but personally speaking, the money was wasted on the second video, and from what I can see of the rest of the videos they made, the value went out the window, with style replacing substance. This is a fine line when it comes to videos, and some would say its only style. Is it style? Or Art? Or Craft? Are style and Art the same thing?
